This is Steve Jobs’ famous commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005. Jobs reflects on his life experiences and shares insights on the importance of following your heart and intuition. He encourages graduates to find what they love and to have the courage to pursue it, even if it means taking risks or facing failure. Jobs also shares how his own setbacks and struggles have ultimately led him to where he is today.

Jobs’s point about trusting that the dots will connect later really stands out—it’s a reminder that setbacks often only make sense in hindsight.

Steve Jobs’ Stanford speech remains one of the clearest reminders that setbacks and uncertainty can shape a meaningful path. The emphasis on following curiosity and intuition feels practical rather than idealistic, especially when he connects it to failure and loss. It’s worth revisiting for anyone trying to align what they love with what they actually do.

Jobs’ speech is a reminder that setbacks can quietly redirect us toward what actually matters. He doesn’t pretend failure is pleasant, but he shows how it can clear away expectations and leave you with your own intuition to follow.

Despite the nickname “How to Live Before You Die,” the core of this speech is about trusting your own path, especially when it doesn’t follow a predictable script.

Jobs’ point about trusting that the dots will connect later is easy to admire in retrospect but much harder to live with in the moment, when a setback just looks like a setback. What makes the speech hold up is that he doesn’t pretend failure is automatically meaningful; he shows that it can only become meaningful through the difficult work of continuing to choose what you love.

Jobs’ message about trusting your intuition and staying open to where setbacks lead is especially striking given how his own path unfolded.

Jobs’ speech still holds up because it frames setbacks as part of finding the right path, not as proof you chose wrong. I appreciate the reminder that intuition and love for the work often matter more than a fixed plan.
